Stephen Downing (U.S.A.) Studying at National Chiao Tung University, Taiwan

【Student Profile】(May, 2015)

Name: Stephen Downing
Country: U.S.A.
University: National Chiao Tung University
Program: PhD at the Institute of Business and Management

My name is Stephen Downing, and I am from Pennsylvania, USA. I completed an MBA in Taiwan in 2012, and I am currently in the second year of a PhD program in Decision Sciences at the Institute of Business and Management at National Chiao Tung University’s (NCTU) Taipei campus.

The MBA program at NCTU in Hsinchu included students from nearly a dozen countries and was a valuable opportunity for learning from people of different backgrounds and perspectives. The PhD program at NCTU’s IBM in Taipei is smaller and more focused on individual and collaborative research.

Being an international student in Taiwan opened doors for me in terms of both employment and further study. However, the most important outcome is more general and involves the well-rounded perspective international study allows you to cultivate about your work and the people with whom you interact, more so than would otherwise be possible from a degree program exclusively in one’s home country.

Taiwan is a beautiful island full of amazing scenery and opportunities for adventure. I personally enjoyed traveling and outdoor activities like climbing Snow Mountain and surfing in YiLan when I had time for them before beginning my PhD program.

Taiwan is incredibly accommodating and welcoming to foreign students regardless of Chinese language experience; however, taking an active interest in both the language and the culture can help to make the transition easier initially and then allow you to be a more engaged visitor during your stay here.
